Meniscus Tear
Definition
The meniscus is a type of cartilage that is located inside the knee. It functions as a shock absorber for the knee joint and also provides stability. A meniscus tear is a common injury to the meniscus.
Mechanism of Injury
A tear to the meniscus can occur during a non-contact injury to include a twisting motion or awkward pivoting or landing of the knee. A direct blow to the knee can also damage the meniscus. Repetitive/high amounts of stress on the knee can also lead to injury.
Symptoms
Symptoms can vary and may include pain and swelling in the joint, instability or giving way of the knee, locking or catching, or palpable tenderness near the area of injury.
Physical Therapy Intervention
Rec Center Physical Therapy can play an important role in helping you recover from a meniscus tear. If the tear is not significant to cause severe symptoms, therapy can assist in restoring strength and motion to help prevent a more serious injury. If surgery is indicated, rehabilitation guided by your physical therapist will be essential in regaining full function of the knee.
