IT Band Syndrome
Definition
IT Band Syndrome refers to inflammation of the iliotibial band, a thick band of fibrous tissue that runs down the outside of the leg and attaches to just below the knee joint. This band assists with other muscles of the thigh to provide stability to the outside of the knee. The irritation is usually located at the knee where it crosses both muscle and bone. There should be a smooth gliding motion between these structures but when inflamed can result in pain with knee movement.
Mechanism of Injury
There are many causes to include abnormal gait mechanics such as excessive pronation, a sudden increase in activity level , flexibility or strength imbalance in the lower extremity, leg length discrepancies to name a few.
Symptoms
When the IT band is irritated, movement of the knee joint becomes painful. It will worsen with continued movement and resolve with rest. Swelling and localized tenderness can occur.
Physical Therapy Intervention
Rec Center Physical Therapy can be the first line of defense for those suffering from IT Band Syndrome. Your physical therapist will evaluate the knee and help determine the exact cause of the irritation. Treatment will then be implemented to reduce pain/swelling and provide the proper exercise regimen to alleviate stress to the IT Band and get you back to all activities.
