ACL Surgery
Definition
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four major knee ligaments. It is crucial to knee stability and when injured can cause severe dysfunction.
A tear of the ACL can occur during sports or with activities of daily living. A complete tear often requires surgery which is termed an ACL reconstruction. This involves another tendon or ligament to substitute for the torn ligament.
Mechanism of Injury
Most ACL tears occur in a non-contact type injury to include landing from a jump or pivoting. They can also occur by contact such as a tackle in football.
Symptoms
Symptoms vary and may include the knee giving way, a “pop” in the knee at time of injury, pain and swelling.
Physical Therapy Intervention
Rehabilitation is one of the most important aspects of ACL reconstruction surgery. Rec Center Physical Therapy will guide you through the critical phases of rehab in order to restore full mobility and strength of the knee. The initial emphasis with treatment is on minimizing pain and swelling and then a safe progression of range of motion and strengthening exercises will be implemented. Rec Center Physical Therapy will help you achieve optimal strength and stability which are critical in prevention of future injury.
