"Tennis" / "Golf" Elbow

Definition

Better known as Lateral and Medial Epicondylitis. It is an overuse injury of the elbow. It is a result of inflammation at the origin of the muscle extensor carpi radialis brevis.

Mechanism of Injury

It is an overuse injury of the elbow generally caused by repetitive use of the wrist extensors, or sustained power gripping. There is an imbalance secondary to muscle weakness and soft tissue flexibility.

Symptoms

Unilateral Symptoms:

  • Gradual Onset
  • Increased pain with activity
  • Pain with grasping items (i.e. gallon of milk)
  • Possible night pain
  • Localized tenderness and palpation to the lateral aspect of the elbow
  • Increased pain with wrist extended (especially when elbow extended)
  • Decreased grip strength

Physical Therapy Intervention

Rec Center Physical Therapy can be the first line of defense for those suffering from tennis or golf elbow. Our goal is to decrease inflammation of this region through stretching and strengthening of the upper extremity musculature. Soft tissue mobilizations, cross friction massage, ASTYMT are utilized to increase flexibility. Modalities (ultrasound, Iontophoresis) are used to decrease inflammation. A tennis elbow strap is also issued to unload the muscle at the muscle origin of insertion.
