Stenosis
Definition
Stenosis involves narrowing either in the spinal canal, called central stenosis, or in the foramina/nerve root canal (where the nerve travels through the spine), called foraminal/lateral stenosis. This usually leads to spinal cord or nerve root compression.
Mechanism of Injury
Age-related, degenerative process of the spine.
Symptoms
Low back pain, numbness/tingling into the lower extremity, and lower extremity weakness.
Symptoms become aggravated with prolonged walking or with spinal extension and are alleviated with sitting or lying down.
Physical Therapy Intervention
Rec Center Physical Therapy can be the first line of defense for those suffering from stenosis by offering treatments such as education regarding posture and how to modify activities to manage symptoms, exercises to address areas of tightness or weakness, and spinal stabilization to improve core control.
