SI Dysfunction

Definition

Sacroiliac dysfunction is pain at the joint connecting the sacrum to the pelvis. This is usually due to an alteration in normal sacroiliac joint motion either causing too much movement or too little movement at the joint.

Mechanism of Injury

Degenerative arthritis, pregnancy, leg length discrepancy, lower extremity pain/problems, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, or injury causing ligamentous strain or pelvic asymmetry.

Symptoms

Low back pain or leg pain which is usually one sided, possible radiation down the leg, which does not extend below the knee.

Symptoms are more common in young and middle aged women. Symptoms worsen with standing and walking and are alleviated when lying down.

Physical Therapy Intervention

Rec Center Physical Therapy can be the first line of defense for those suffering from SI dysfunction by offering treatments such as education, exercises for stretching and/or for spinal stabilization, bracing options to improve stability, manual therapy, and modalities for pain reduction.
