Sciatica
Definition
Sciatica is a general term meaning inflammation of the sciatic nerve. The nerve can become impinged either centrally at the L4-5 or L5-S1 segments (via disc pathology) or peripherally in the lower extremity.
Mechanism of Injury
Disc pathology, lower extremity muscle tightness, injury causing excessive stretching of the sciatic nerve, internal bleeding, infections, or tumors.
Symptoms
Unilateral low back pain and burning/numbness/tingling down the back of the leg.
Symptoms worsen with forward bending and are typically alleviated with lying down.
