Joint Dysfunction
Definition
Lumbar joint dysfunction is characterized by the facet of the joint locking therefore causing decreased mobility at that joint. This can lead to secondary problems such as an increase in mobility at neighboring segments of the spine.
Mechanism of Injury
Compromised body mechanics or injury, bending, twisting, and lifting.
Symptoms
Pain in the involved region with spinal extension, especially with combined rotation and side-bending of the spine.
Physical Therapy Intervention
Rec Center Physical Therapy can be the first line of defense for those suffering from joint dysfunction by offering treatments such as education regarding body mechanics and posture, manual therapy which may include joint mobilizations to restore joint mobility, exercises for spinal mobility and/or stability, and modalities to decrease pain.
